Sun to Open Source Java
November 13th, 2006 by Stephen
Java has just been catapulted back into the main stream with Sun’s decision to release the programming language under the GNU General Public License (version 2). Now at last we have the hope of some really good open source Java tools – starting perhaps with a version of gcj that can actually compile all Java code down to native code. (Maybe a way off, but with the mass of code Sun are contributing, it is now possible).
Yes, this goes beyond the original core values of Java, but so what? If we can write faster code in Java as a result, then maybe we won’t be so ready to resort to C all of the time.
As U turns go, this has to be one of the more welcome ones.
Thanks Sun Microsystems.
